Cannabis Packaging Child Safety Tips|Cannabis industry need to know

As the cannabis industry has grown, so has the need for child safety in packaging. Additionally, regulations for marijuana packaging vary from state to state. If you want to sell in different states, you also need to familiarize yourself with the regulations of those states. You need to do These include child resistance, opacity, and the use of language and imagery in labels.

Childproof

Child resistance is a very important part, meaning that cannabis packaging products have been tested for child safety (e.g. ASTM certification). These standardized tests involve having children of various ages try to open the package, which measures the child's resistance.

ASTM(American Society for Testing and Materials) certification also includes the ability for elderly patients to open products, as they are critical to ensuring accessibility for the elderly.

The hospital experience of a 6-year-old girl in the United States is enough to prove the importance of child protection.

Morgan McCoy, who spent the night in the emergency room with her daughter, said her daughter also had a seizure as a result of ingesting the drug. She shared her experience on Facebook to talk about the dangers of the packaging of marijuana edibles.

McCoy explained that they were visiting friends and family over the weekend, and that one parent, a medical marijuana patient, had a weed gummy that they ultimately put in a dresser in the bedroom they were staying in, and that her kid — who usually stayed in that room — went looking for her clothes, she saw the gummy and ate it, thinking it was candy.

The candy McCoy’s 6-year-old daughter ate had “Hawaiian Punch” written on it and while the packaging did say the gummies were “cannabis-infused,” no six-year-old is going to understand what that means.

According to the above case, we need to strengthen child protection for marijuana packaging. Image labels are of course necessary, but they are incomprehensible to a child. Therefore, the packaging needs to be designed so that children cannot open it, which is much safer

Opaque

Opaque packaging means the product inside is not "visible". This ensures that the product does not tempt children to open the package to access cannabis. Coupled with laws requiring warning labels, the opaque packaging further keeps children away from your flower. The opacity law is one of the few requirements for cannabis packaging that is nearly universally applicable. So even if your state doesn't require it right now, it's definitely worth preparing for it.

Label image

Labels affect how customers see and perceive a product. Vivid images make your products more eye-catching and establish your brand advantage. A warning label makes the packaging even more child-resistant.

The types of  packaging options

Vials and Jars

Most of them rely on some sort of “pop lock” system with a tab that’s pushed in to release the inside of the packaging.

Mylar Bags

Smell-Proof Dispensary Bags are another popular option that have been in use by cannabis companies since the start of the boom. Mylar bags are most often used for flower and for edibles, sporting some of the best labeling options on the market.
